See the unexpected beauty in the microbes behind cow burps

Up close, they are beautiful and evocative — at least more than you might imagine for tiny organisms that live inside the stomachs of livestock and help generate planet-warming gases.

Known as rumen ciliates, these microbes could be playing a more significant role in climate change than previously understood, according to research published Thursday in the journal Science.
