‘Michael’ Claims Top Spot During Sluggish Weekend

‘Michael’ Review: The Thrill Is Not Gone, as a Surprisingly Effective Middle-of-the-Road Biopic Conducts Michael Jackson’s Electricity Courtesy of Lionsgate

Universal’s biographical drama “Michael” debuted at the top of the China box office during the April 24–26 weekend, earning RMB32.6 million ($4.8 million), according to data from Artisan Gateway.

With $217.3 million, “Michael” is also the No. 1 film in the world, per Comscore.

The local drama “It’s OK” moved to second place in its fourth weekend, adding $1.7 million for a cumulative total of $26.8 million. Produced by China Film and directed by Yang Lina, the film features Wen Qi and Qin Hailu in a story centering on a young woman whose life is disrupted by the sudden arrival of her mother as she prepares for an urgent medical procedure. 

Horror-thriller “The Caged Butterfly” followed in third place, taking in $1.5 million to push its total to $13.1 million. Produced by Ultra Comedy and directed by Hao Han, the film stars Li Meng, Liu Siwei, and Jiang Zhuojun. The story is set within the notorious Butterfly Mansion villa. The plot follows a physiotherapy therapist and a greedy schemer who move into the haunted estate, only to be plagued by bizarre events and a life-or-death game involving a woman in a red dress and a distorted, eyeless boy.

Columbia Pictures’ science-fiction epic “Project Hail Mary” maintained a presence in the top five during its sixth weekend, earning $1.3 million at No. 4 for a total haul of $39.1 million.

Rounding out the top five, Universal’s “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” earned $1.2 million, bringing its total to $18.7 million.

The overall weekend remained significantly quiet as the market awaits the upcoming May Day holiday slate, with total grosses reaching only $16 million.

Mainland China’s 2026 year-to-date revenue stands at $1.89 billion, down 49.6% from the same period in 2025.
