Oscar-nominated actress Ariana Grande is not just a Focker-in-Law. The pop star has been in the studio and will release her eighth studio album later this year. Petal will be written with her longtime collaborator Ilya, with whom she worked on some of her biggest hits, including “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored,” “God Is a Woman,” and “Side to Side.” Grande described the album as “something that is full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging.” She looks blissed out on petal’s black-and-white album cover if that gives us any indication of her vibe right now. It is scheduled for a July 31 release, and we’re still waiting for news on the lead single.
The release date falls toward the end of her Eternal Sunshine world tour, which begins June 6 in Oakland, California, and ends on August 23 in London. Only Chicago’s and London’s performances fall after the album comes out. Will those two cities get to hear selections from petal that everybody else won’t?
Last November, Grande said she plans on taking a break from pop music for a “long, long, long, long time” after this tour wraps. “I’m going to give it my all,” she said on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang. “And it’s going to be beautiful, and I’m so grateful. That’s why I’m doing it.” Then music will take a back seat: “I’m like, ‘One last hurrah!’” If Grande still plans on taking that break, at least she put one last petal to the metal for her fans.
