The 202 Major League Baseball season has been going on for just under one month and yet a former Boston Red Sox top prospect is surprisingly still looking for his next home.
There was a time when flamethrower Michael Kopech was tearing it up down in the Red Sox’s farm system. There was a time when he actually hit 105 miles per hour on the radar gun down in Boston’s system. Kopech was a first-round pick by the Red Sox back in 2014. He made it up to High-A in the Red Sox’s system before he was one of the centerpieces in the Red Sox’s deal to acquire Chris Sale from the Chicago White Sox.

Kopech eventually made his big league debut as a member of the White Sox in 2018 and has appeared in 184 total big league games since across six seasons with Chicago and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has transitioned from the starting rotation to the bullpen.
The flamethrower had a 2.45 ERA in 14 total appearances last year for the Dodgers across 11 innings pitched. Now, he’s available in free agency at just 29 years old. There are a few guys available right now in free agency with more upside than Kopech. Another name that would fit this description would be Lucas Giolito, who thrived with the Red Sox in 2025.
At some point, Kopech should get an opportunity. It doesn’t make much sense that he’s available, frankly.
