“Same here, I bought some new-old-stock French quality sheets that were slightly stained from lying on a shelf for years (got the stains out right away, no problem). They were very affordable, but man, these were made to last you 50 years, and it shows. The weight after washing is unlike anything I’ve owned, and you definitely need to break them in. The reputation of linen sheets is that it takes a year or so (!), but they do get softer. Ironing helps, too. I bought them on a Dutch website for secondhand stuff called ‘Marktplaats’ (I think eBay owns the website now).”
