Olivia Rodrigo is gearing up to release her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, and if you haven’t already applied non-waterproof mascara to cry in, you’re late. The pop star spent her first album cycle, for the purple-hued Sour, constantly surprising listeners. First, she amazed the world with her megasmash breakup ballad “Driver’s License,” then she shocked people again when she pivoted hard into emo for her next No. 1 hit, “Good for You.” Her sophomore album used many of the same tricks: Guts also had a four-letter title and a purple cover and again swapped between beautiful ballads and rock-and-roll edge. This third album’s strong departure from her first two is making us excited, as are all the tidbits she’s teased so far on social media and in interviews.
Below, find everything we think we know about Rodrigo’s upcoming junior record.
The only actual “sound” released from this record so far came from Rodrigo’s Instagram. On April 10, Rodrigo posted a video of people at a pub drinking Guinness beers, overlaid with text reading, “I hope you never finish that beer.” Then, she posted a selfie video of herself on a train, leaning on the window in a pink sweater, with the text “it’s feminine intuition.” Both videos came with some synth-y chords that eventually give way to the sound of someone, presumably Rodrigo, taking a breath, about to sing. Given the snippets’ timing, it’s likely that she’s teasing the lyrics of the album’s first single, “Drop Dead,” which is coming out April 17.
Ahead of the album’s release, Rodrigo was on the cover of British Vogue, where she described being in an emotional state that reflected the album title. “I realized all my favorite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them,” she told the mag. “Falling in love, [I thought] that the second I’m in a really great relationship, I’m gonna start feeling good about myself, and this stuff is going to fall into place. But it just doesn’t work like that.”
Rodrigo has not actually confirmed if she is in a relationship or not at the moment. She was dating actor Louis Partridge, but The Sun reported in December that they broke up. And, while it’s uncouth to wish harm on another person’s relationship, she is just so good at writing breakup songs that it’s hard to stop.
The first live performance of Rodrigo’s album cycle (barring a surprise Coachella drop-in on the day the single comes out …) will come on May 2. That day, she is pulling double duty on Saturday Night Live. She’ll both make her hosting debut and perform as musical guest for the third time. Given that the musical guest typically gets two numbers, that could mean that she’ll have a second single out by then. Or it could mean she’s going to pull a Chappell Roan and perform an unreleased track.
While the first single is less than a week away, the full You Look Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love album won’t be coming out until June 12. She’s ready to rule the summer.
