The prospect of Paul Thomas Anderson winning Best Director isn’t the only much-anticipated Oscar breakthrough, though all the other ones lie in the craft awards. Production designer Jack Fisk (Marty Supreme) is on his fourth nomination with zero wins, having previously been nominated for There Will Be Blood, The Revenant, and Killers of the Flower Moon. That’s not even counting the legendary movies he wasn’t nominated for, all the way back to Badlands and Carrie (both starring his wife of 50+ years, Sissy Spacek), Days of Heaven, and Mulholland Drive.
Cinematographer Darius Khondji is also nominated for his work on Marty Supreme, having previously been nominated for Evita and Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths. I’d argue the best and most influential work in Khondji’s career went unnominated, including cinematography for Seven, Panic Room, and Uncut Gems.
Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood got his third career Oscar nomination for composing the original score for One Battle After Another. He’s previously lost for his scores for Phantom Thread and The Power of the Dog, and that’s not counting outright snubs for the scores for There Will Be Blood and You Were Never Really Here.
At the moment, none of these craftspeople are favored to win their categories, but they’re reason enough to root for some upsets.
