“YALL WE GOT WILLY WONKA’D!!!” So began a Reddit thread on Barbie Dream Fest, the latest fan event to go viral for underwhelming guests. The three-day event in Fort Lauderdale promised a walkthrough Dream House, an ‘80s roller rink, and a meet and greet with Serena Williams. Instead, attendees got a sad square of fake lawn un front of a (un-Dreamlike) house cutout, a “rink” that felt more like a 4H enclosure, and a meet and greet with Serena Williams. Hey, 1 out of 3 isn’t actually that bad for events like this. Here’s everything we know about Barbie Dream Fest, the latest DashCon/Fyre Fest/Willy Wonka Experience to capture the internet’s ire.

Barbie Dream Fest is a three-day-long convention held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this past weekend. Per the event website, the convention promised interactive experiences, unique programming, star-studded panels and meet-and-greets, and a marketplace for unique Barbie merch. Serena Williams, Angel Reese, and Madison Marilla from Love on the Spectrum were some of the special guests announced for the weekend. A one-day ticket for an adult costs $72, while a three-day pass for the entire event costs $152; premium passes were as expensive as $452. The event was organized by the ironically named Mischief Management, who’s organized Broadway fan conventions in the past.

Attendees are commenting on Barbie Dream Fest’s social media channels, demanding refunds after feeling “scammed” by the event. “This was honestly so insulting to arrive after paying almost $80 for it to be soooo underwhelming with the lack of effort in decorations and nothing entertaining to do for anyone. Truly a scam,” one attendee wrote on Instagram. But for those who stole shoelaces from the president, the event looked more like Dash Con if anything: empty ballrooms, lack of themed decorations, and seemingly biting off more than they can chew. Except this time it’s a billion-dollar brand.

Nothing officially from Mischief Management. Guests like Madison Marilla and Chopped champion Becky Brown posted Instagram Reels like everything was normal. What’s more, the website still has language about a 2027 event.
