Universal’s “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” blasted into first place at the China box office during the April 3–5 weekend, according to data from Artisan Gateway, earning RMB57.1 million ($8.3 million) in its debut frame.
China Film’s drama “It’s OK,” after debuting in fifth place with previews last week, opened on April 3 and climbed to second place in its second weekend, taking in $6.1 million for a $9.9 million cumulative total. Directed by Yang Lina and starring Wen Qi and Qin Hailu, the film follows Xu Ke, a young woman whose life is disrupted by the sudden arrival of her mother just as she prepares for an urgent medical procedure.
Columbia’s science-fiction epic “Project Hail Mary” moved to third place, adding $5.7 million for a total of $27.5 million.
Dirty Monkeys’ “Now I Met Her” debuted in fourth place, earning $4.1 million. Directed by Xiao Luxi, the film stars Sandra Ma and Ke Bai. The plot follows Shiyi, who never knew his mother until he receives a diary on his 18th birthday that reveals her extraordinary life of love and laughter across changing eras. The film had its world premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year.
Rounding out the top five, the psychological thriller “Game of Identity” earned $3.6 million in its two-day opening weekend. Produced by Maoyan Pictures and directed by Cheng Liang, the film stars Peng Yuchang and Ding Yuxi. The story explores a dangerous “life exchange” between a gifted young man and a wealthy heir, which quickly devolves into a high-stakes game of manipulation and greed.
Mainland China’s overall weekend grosses reached $39.5 million, while the 2026 year-to-date revenue stands at $1.76 billion, down 50.7% from the same period in 2025.
