The balm is also dispensed from a convenient (and chic) push-top bottle, which helps you dose the perfect amount. From the packaging to the product’s consistency, the whole process feels elevated—more comparable to a fun-to-use new skin care product than a standard conditioner. It seriously feels—and acts—like a high-quality moisturizer for my hair.
The skin care parallels are also evident on the ingredients list: OUAI’s Bond Repair Balm includes hyaluronic acid and rice peptides—the same plumping, moisturizing agents you’re likely to find in a glass skin serum. These ingredients help lock in moisture and fortify the hair shaft, while vegan silk protein smooths over the cuticle and reduces the appearance of breakage, and a lipid complex helps restore natural oils to each damaged strand.
As recommended, I start with one full pump of Bond Repair Balm, mixing it in my hands raking it evenly through my hair from my eye-line to my ends. It works effectively as a detangler, melting away the pesky knots that form around the crown of my head after lathering up my shampoo. From there, I usually add a second pump to make sure my strands are evenly coated and to seal the surface of my hair.
I let the balm soak in for the recommended three minutes while I run through the rest of my ‘everything shower’—which feels extra luxurious thanks to the product’s ‘Melrose Place’ fragrance (OUAI’s signature rose-bergamot-lychee scent). The product washes out super easily and leaves my hair feeling noticeably silkier, even when wet. I used Bond Repair Balm in place of my usual conditioner for every wash for about two weeks, and have since switched off to using it once weekly.
After using Bond Repair Balm, I style my hair as usual—usually a full blow-dry with a round brush. After my very first use, my hair felt touchably soft and silky once dry. After a few repeats, I noticed significant improvement in my frizz, flyaways, and frazzled ends. Best yet, my hair looks fuller and healthier than it does when I use a traditional conditioner, but feels lighter than it does after using a hair mask. Even my curtain bangs—which are constantly under heat—look smoother and retain bouncy volume after using the OUAI balm.
