Wahoo! Just like the original movie, the Super Mario Galaxy movie is breaking records at the box office during its opening weekend. What’s even more impressive is that some of its records don’t even include the full five-day weekend, as the movie opened on April 1. It’s now the biggest three-day opening of the year, with $130.9 million domestically, and the second-biggest opening for Illumination. As for the five-day weekend records, it’s now the fourth-biggest five-day opening at $182.4 million, behind Moana 2, Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Beyond the domestic box office, internationally, the movie is now the second biggest global opening for a video game-inspired movie. That’s a lot of coins.

As for milestones to aim for, Mario Galaxy can outgross its predecessor if it earns more than $574 million during its domestic theatrical run. But there’s a good chance it could gross over $1 billion globally during its theatrical run, especially given how well it’s doing this weekend. It’s more of a matter of when and if it can reach it faster than the first.
