Savannah Guthrie returned to her job at the Today show on April 6 for the first time since her mother Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping. “It’s good to be home,” Savannah said during airing. The show did not directly acknowledge Nancy’s case on air, but Savannah was wearing a sunflower-yellow dress — the color of hope for a missing person. Outside the studio, fans wore yellow ribbons and held signs showing support for the Guthrie family. “Some beautiful signs out there,” Savannah said. “I’m excited to see them and give them all a hug, and really feeling the love so much.” Savannah went outside to meet her fans during the show’s second hour. “You guys have been so beautiful,” she told them. “I’ve received so many letters, so much kindness to me and my whole family.”
Today viewers are well-acquainted with the tragedy — not only has it been headline news since February 1, but Savannah also opened up about the difficult time during a recent two-part interview with her friend and co-anchor Hoda Kotb on March 26 and 27. “I can’t come back and try to be something I’m not,” Guthrie said to Kotb, anticipating the tone of her return. “But I can’t not come back. I want to smile, and when I do, it will be real. My joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer.”
