
Ryan Gosling is headed to the world of daytime television.
The three-time Academy Award nominee and known character breaker on “Saturday Night Live” has accepted an offer from longtime “Days of Our Lives” star Deidre Hall to stop by the show, after he praised her performance on the soap opera when he appeared on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.
So, how did we get here? Read on for the comments that led to Gosling saying he would like to pay a visit to Salem, where “Days of Our Lives” takes place, for those of you uninitiated.
What Did Ryan Gosling Say About Deidre Hall?
The whole matter began when Gosling said daytime TV stars are underappreciated performers during his March 19 appearance on “Happy Sad Confused.”
“Soap opera actors, in general, they do not get the love they deserve,” he said, while marveling how they have to “memorize the night before 10 pages of dialogue.”
“It’s impossible scenarios,” he added before singling out Marlena, Hall’s character on “Days of Our Lives.”
“She was possessed by the devil, right? Deidre Hall has to suddenly, after playing a normal person (play a possessed person),” he said about a well-known storyline in which on the show before going on to note how actors have to adjust to returning to life after they had died.
He continued to salute Hall’s work.
“What’s amazing is I remember thinking, like, ‘God, Deidre Hall’s a great actress because she’s having to act possessed right now. That just seems like a lot to ask of her,’” he said.
How Did Deidre Hall React to Ryan Gosling’s Words?
Hall said she and others on the show got wind of the “Barbie” star’s comments.
“We’re just thrilled to be acknowledged and to be so well spoken of because we work really hard, as you acknowledged,” she said in a March 26 Instagram video.
“So we think it would be nice if you wanted to come over and see what we do in our neck of the woods,” she said, while calling the offer “an open invitation to visit the ‘Days of Our Lives’ set.”
She then cheekily alluded to the possession storyline.
“Nobody will be possessed. And if they are, I’ll keep an eye on you,” she said.
What Did Ryan Gosling Say About Deidre Hall’s Offer?
Gosling is all in.
“Deidre Hall, are you kidding me? Yes. This is a very enthusiastic yes to a very cordial invitation to visit you on set,” he said in response in a March 27 video posted on Instagram.
He then went on to rave about how her work resonated with him more than some other A-list stars.
“I will be there to thank you in person for being my OG acting inspiration. It wasn’t Marlon Brando in ‘On the Waterfront.’ It wasn’t (Robert) De Niro in ‘Taxi Driver.’ It was you,” he said.
“I want to thank you for your offer. Anytime, anywhere, you tell me. I’ll be there.”
He may have then intentionally or accidentally referenced his current movie, “Project Hail Mary.”
“I’m not worried about the possession, I’ll say a Hail Mary before I get there. It’ll be fine and I’ll see you on set,” he concluded.
