The current award season is finally coming to a close, culminating in Hollywood’s biggest night of the year: the 98th Academy Awards.
This year’s ceremony, held on March 15, already made history before returning host Conan O’Brien even welcomed all the stars and viewers to the award show. When the nominees were announced for the 2026 Oscars in January, “Sinners” led with a historic 16 nominations, including in the categories of best picture, best director, best actor, best supporting actor and best supporting actress. The Southern vampire epic is now the most nominated Oscar film of all time, surpassing “La La Land,” “Titanic” and “All About Eve,” which were tied with 14.
Following “Sinners” was “One Battle After Another,” with an impressive 13 nods. “Frankenstein” and “Sentimental Value” closely trailed with nine and “Hamnet” earned eight nominations.
Going into the ceremony, some categories, such as best actor, didn’t have an obvious winner as nominees Michael B. Jordan, Timothée Chalamet and Wagner Moura all nabbed important wins during the award season circuit. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also added a new category this year: casting.
By the time all the actors, directors, cinematographers and more creatives filed into the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, it was still a toss up as to who would end the night with one, or more, golden Oscar statues in their hands.
