Meryl Streep is channeling Miranda Priestly with a series of precisely chosen looks on the “The Devil Wears Prada 2” press tour. If the famously exacting editor-in-chief couldn’t find a garment in the exact shade she had in mind — say, a cerulean blue as a cheeky nod to one of the original film’s most memorable scenes — what would she do? Have it custom-made, of course.

In Streep’s case, it was J. Crew that had the genius idea of recreating their cashmere crewneck sweater in cerulean for Streep’s Late Show appearance on Wednesday night. Created in collaboration with stylist Micaela Erlanger, the custom design “reimagines cerulean through a modern lens,” the heritage brand said in a press release.

The cerulean monologue comes early in the film, while Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs is still finding her footing at “Runway.” Sitting in the magazine’s closet as editors debate two nearly identical belts, Andy stifles a laugh, prompting Streep’s Priestly to coolly dismantle her indifference. “You think this has nothing to do with you,” she says, before zeroing in on Andy’s outfit: “You go to your closet and you select… I don’t know… that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back, but what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.”

“Meryl made cerulean a cultural thesis, so the bar was high,” Olympia Gayot, J. Crew’s creative director and executive designer, says. “That monologue is so smart and funny — it reminds you that what feels personal is actually part of a much bigger story, which is why ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ still resonates.”

While the cerulean version was custom for Streep and not widely available (at least yet), the signature sweater does come in a variety of rich hues such as a ruby red, navy and neon pink — all currently available on J. Crew.
