When casting directors put out a call for a “Daniel Radcliffe type,” it seems unlikely that Mariska Hargitay’s agents would send it her way. But that’s what is happening in the Broadway revival of Every Brilliant Thing. Radcliffe now stars in the interactive dramedy about a man struggling with the legacy of his mother’s suicide attempts, and he will soon pass the role to Hargitay.

“I read Every Brilliant Thing and cried, rejoiced, laughed, cried some more, and loved it so much,” Hargitay said in a statement. “I’m always drawn to themes of healing and renewal, especially when the journey is rendered in all its complexity. It feels like an extraordinary gift to make my Broadway debut, the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, with a play that affirms life so emphatically. For me, the triumph of this beautiful piece of work — this luminously brilliant thing — is that through a deeply personal story, we experience the universal endeavor of keeping ourselves pointed towards light, compassion, and hope.”

Every Brilliant Thing is a solo play, and its interactive elements have made it memorable for audiences, who act as supporting characters in the production. Those parts include the main character’s veterinarian, father, and school counselor. Our critic, Sara Holdren, even married Radcliffe onstage during the show. Next up, some lucky Law & Order: SVU fans will get to live out their version of that dream when Hargitay joins the show on May 26, following Radcliffe’s final performance on May 24.
