Now that FX’s hit series “Love Story” is officially over, fans have one burning question on their minds: Will there be another season?
The nine-episode show, which relived John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s relationship, aired its last episode on March 26. As many viewers know, their story ends tragically.
“Love Story: John F. Kennedy and Carolyn Bessette” is described as the first installment of a new anthology series from Ryan Murphy, who also produced series like “American Crime Story,” which has spotlighted the trial of O.J. Simpson and the assassination of Gianni Versace.
While a second installment of “Love Story” has not been announced, creator Connor Hines is already thinking of future inspirations.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hines reflected on the success of the series, saying, “It’s exactly as I pictured it in my mind when I was writing it.”
Hines also cited one couple’s story to potentially dramatize next.
“Maybe Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton,” Hines said. “They have the right intensity.”
The two actors had a tumultous on-again, off-again relationship and were married twice, between 1964-1974 and 1975-1976.
Since its premiere on Feb. 12,”Love Story” has become a cultural sensation and piqued the curiosity of a new generation about the couple’s New York, ’90s romance.
In March, “Love Story” set a record by becoming FX’s most-watched limited series ever on Hulu and Disney+. At the time, only five episodes had been released and streamed more than 25 million hours since its premiere.
The limited series followed Kennedy and Bessette from the early days of their relationship to their tragic deaths.
The series has also sparked some criticism, despite the show’s warning before each episode that “certain depictions of people and events have been dramatized or fictionalized for storytelling purposes.” Actor Daryl Hannah, who previously dated Kennedy, wrote in a New York Times op-ed that her portrayal in “Love Story” was “not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John.”
Jack Schlossberg, Caroline Kennedy’s son and JFK Jr.’s nephew, has called the show a “grotesque display of someone else’s life.”
“Love Story” didn’t shy away from sharing the highs and lows of Kennedy and Bessette’s at-times tumultuous relationship, including their famous explosive fight in a New York City park.
Elizabeth Beller, the author of “Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy,” which inspired “Love Story,” opened up about the couple’s relationship dynamic in a recent interview with TODAY.com.
“I think it’s two people who loved each other very much and had a lot on their plates,” Beller said. “Young marriages need time, and they had so many pressures on them, and then you add the public eye and a constant paparazzi. It just creates a pressure cooker.”
Since the couple’s lives were highly publicized by paparazzi, both the positive and negative moments of their relationship became tabloid fodder at times.
“I land on — they really loved each other, but there were realities that made things very difficult,” Beller said. “I don’t know any couple … if you don’t fight, you’re not living in the same house. So even if they fought and there was turmoil, that does not mean there was not a deep love.”
