Kristin Cavallari and Lauren Conrad have come a long way from their “Laguna Beach” days.
When the MTV reality series debuted in 2004, viewers were introduced to a group of high school students from Laguna Beach.
The friend group encountered, and created, plenty of drama over the course of the show’s three seasons. Cavallari and Conrad were at the center of the drama and were involved in an alleged love triangle with the show’s resident hunk, Stephen Colletti.
Cavallari and Conrad feuded for years, but they recently got back together for a “Laguna Beach” reunion nearly 20 years after “Laguna Beach” aired its last episode.
Ahead of the reunion’s premiere on the Roku Channel on April 10, Conrad and Cavallari spoke to TODAY.com about their relationship, then and now.
What Happened Between Kristin Cavallari and Lauren Conrad?
One of the main storylines of “Laguna Beach” followed a love triangle between Colletti, Conrad and Cavallari.
Colletti and Conrad knew each other as children and continued their friendship through high school. Meanwhile, Colletti and Cavallari were high school sweethearts who were involved in on-again, off-again relationship.
Throughout the series, Conrad and Cavallari exhibited animosity towards each other.
In 2022, Conrad appeared on Colletti and Cavallari’s podcast, “Back to the Beach with Kristin and Stephen.” During the episode, the two addressed their feud.
“My take on it is, you and I really never had any beef, really” Cavallari told Conrad. “Obviously, there was a little truth to what happened with the three of us. I felt like MTV coming kept it alive and made it way worse than it ever would have been. Is that also your take? And you can be brutally honest about it.”
“Yeah, I think it was done when they started filming,” Conrad said, adding that she and Cavallari had a fight before filming started but later moved on.
“We got into it and then made up,” Conrad added. “I mean, I don’t think we were best friends. But we were like, ‘It’s fine.’”
Cavallari suggested that she and Conrad “never had an issue” with one another, but Conrad disagreed, saying, “I mean, we had an issue with each other. But it had been squashed. They ran with it. It made for an interesting show.”
In a trailer for the “Laguna Beach” reunion, Cavallari addressed the love triangle, saying, “It was the history with the two of them and Stephen being my boyfriend. I mean, just naturally, anyone probably wouldn’t like the other girl in that situation.”
Conrad added to the conversation, saying, “We did not like each other.”
What Did Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari Say About Their Relationship Now?
Nearly 20 years have passed since “Laguna Beach” ended. When asked where their feud stands today, Cavallari and Conrad shared the following update with TODAY.com.
“We did see each other a bit when we were in LA and always got along. And then even in Tennessee, I’ve been here, so we haven’t actually hung out in a really long time. But this has been a blast. We’ve had so much fun doing this,” Conrad said, referring to seeing Cavallari in Nashville, where she lives.
Cavallari said she appreciated the opportunity to clear the air when Conrad appeared on the podcast she hosted with Colletti in 2022.
“Obviously, it’s been so long. I mean, I’m just happy that we’ve gotten this time together where we can truly just put everything in the past. It’s been really nice,” Cavallari said.
Now that both Cavallari and Conrad are parents, they can’t help but watch “Laguna Beach” with a different lens.
“It’s hard being a kid. There’s drama with friends. There’s boy-girl drama. Everything we went through was very relatable, very real. And I’m starting to see little trickles of it now as my kids get a little bit older,” Cavallari said.
