Jeff Shell‘s legal team is engaged in preliminary talks with Paramount Skydance on a possible exit from the media giant, where currently serves as president. If Shell remains at the company, he will most likely transition to a different, more advisory role, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.
The talks come during a messy legal battle in which Shell was sued March 9 by R.J. Cipriani, a professional gambler who claims he is owed $150 million for crisis communications services. Cipriani’s lawsuit also alleges that Shell shared confidential info about Paramount Skydance with Cipriani, including Shell’s alleged belief that Paramount is overpaying for Warner Bros. Discovery. Paramount has an agreement in place to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery for $111 billion; the deal is pending regulatory approval. Shell initially was supposed to remain on board until the transaction had been completed, but it looks as though that timetable has been expedited.
No final decision on Shell’s status at the company will be made until an internal investigation into Shell’s involvement with Cipriani is completed in the coming weeks.
Spokespeople for Shell and Paramount declined to comment.
Shell filed a counter-complaint, accusing Cipriani of trying to extort and defame him by creating “an utterly false tale that Shell had disclosed confidential details about Paramount’s business.” Shell’s counterclaim says, “Shell owes Cipriani nothing and brings these counterclaims to seek redress for the damages that he has suffered as a result of Cipriani’s relentless, malicious campaign to extort and defame him. Shell further expressly reserves the right to supplement these counterclaims to seek full restitution and recourse against Cipriani and his agents that have knowingly participated in his slanderous and extortionate scheme.”
Shell has a reputation for being a canny media executive. However, he sometimes clashed with other members of Paramount’s leadership team, who found his style to be abrasive, sources tell Variety.
Shell was hired at Paramount in July 2024 after David Ellison’s Skydance Media acquired the legacy studio for $8 billion. Prior to that, Shell was CEO of NBCUniversal from 2019 to 2023. Shell was fired by Comcast, the studio’s parent company, in April 2023 after an internal investigation found he had engaged in an “inappropriate” relationship with an employee, who had filed a complaint against Shell for sexual harassment and sex discrimination.
Puck first reported that Shell’s lawyers had started to talk to Paramount about a possible exit.
