Two months after her mother went missing, Savannah Guthrie is returning to Today on April 6. “I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not. But I can’t not come back, because it’s my family,” Guthrie explained in an interview with Hoda Kotb on March 27, where she announced her return. “I think it’s part of my purpose right now. I want to smile. And when I do, it will be real. And my joy will be my protest.” It’s unclear if she is resuming her full co-hosting duties for the show and she told Kotb she worries about returning to normalcy but she wants to try. “I don’t know if I can do it,” she explained. “I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try. I’m not going to be the same, but maybe it’s like that old poem—more beautiful in the broken places.” Her last in-studio appearance was on January 30, two days before her mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing.
