Hollywood Is Nowhere to Be Found

Well, this all sounds très chic. The Cannes International Film Festival confirmed its lineup today. Some buzzy films may still be announced, but, looking over the list at the moment, it’s shockingly devoid of American studio films. Prestige Hollywood projects like the Tom Cruise–starring Digger or Disney’s Toy Story 5 are not in the lineup. In fact, only one American filmmaker is playing a movie in competition: Ira Sachs, with The Man I Love. The upcoming Brooklyn-set queer musical film is a particularly large-scale project from the Peter Hujar’s Day director, with major stars like Rami Malek, Tom Sturridge, Rebecca Hall, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Hopefully he does Americans proud.

“Of course, I feel nostalgic for that golden age when studios used to produce a lot of films, every month, auteur films … for what American cinema and what the studio system was,” Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux told Deadline. He added, “It’s complicated to separate American cinema, with the studio on one side and independent cinema on the other side. We’ll see. To do an analysis of what cinema is and what Cannes is and what American cinema is, you need a half-decade.”

Sachs is joined in competition by a lot of international heavyweights. Pedro Almodóvar’s Bitter Christmas will also compete, starring Spanish favorite Bárbara Lennie. Also competing is two-time Oscar-winning Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi’s Parallel Tales; Drive My Car Oscar nominee Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden; and Cold War director Paweł Pawlikowski’s new movie Fatherland, starring Sandra Hüller, fresh off the success of Project Hail Mary.

In Un Certain Regard, two American wunderkinds will play: Jane Schoenbrun, with Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, and Jordan Firstman, with Club Kid. And, out of competition, Andy Garcia’s Diamond will play.
