Drake Jackson is returning to the Washington Commanders in 2026 and met with the local media on Thursday after signing his contract.
Jackson came to the Commanders in 2025, having been released by the 49ers due to a severe knee injury, suffering a torn patellar tendon. Working through the season, Jackson was activated and got in three games of action, which Jackson feels “let the team see what I can do before letting me come back.”

The young man, no doubt, is aware of all the signings on the defense by GM Adam Peters. Jackson thus made it a point Thursday to say that he wants new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones to know, “I can do whatever he needs. He needs me to drop, needs me to rush, needs me to play linebacker, I’ll do it.”
The injury has humbled him, and now he sounds like he understands his NFL life may depend upon just making the roster in 2026. Thus, he wants to commit right away to doing whatever is necessary to help the team, to make the team.
“I definitely didn’t know I was going to be able to play football again… and God blessed me with a second chance.” Jackson is entering his age-25 season as a rotational edge rusher for the Commanders. Jackson (6-4, 273) is entering his fourth season after being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round (61st overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft.
