Javier Bardem’s Oscar-winning performance as Anton Chigurh in the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men remains an iconic villain turn 20 years later. Now, Bardem is getting a chance to sink his teeth into a similarly vicious freak and natural disaster in Apple TV’s upcoming miniseries adaptation of Cape Fear, playing the terrifying Max Cady. In the trailer, he’s wearing spooky blue contacts, covered in freaky eye tattoos, and asking evil questions like, “What is your worst fear?” After the original 1962 Cape Fear film, the Max Cady role was made famous by Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese’s sexual, grimy 1990s adaptation. If there’s anybody who can wrest Cady out of De Niro’s hands, it’s Bardem.
The upcoming miniseries follows a family, headed by parents Anne (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson). The two are attorneys who got Cady locked up for life. When Cady is released from prison, he comes after them. Immediately, the set-up differs from Scorsese’s version, in which just the patriarch was the lawyer. Also different is the makeup of the family: The Bowdens have two young daughters for Cady to torture, as opposed to just one.
The new Cape Fear is from showrunner Nick Antosca (Antlers) and produced by both Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. It premieres June 10 with two episodes, and the full run includes ten installments. Suburbia will never be the same.
