Brian Cox Cooks Johnny Depp and Kevin Spacey

Well, it’s a day ending in y, which means that it’s time for acclaimed actor and now first-time director Brian Cox to fire off some mean thoughts about various celebrities. In the promotional lead-up to his feature directorial debut, Glenrothan, starring himself and fellow countryman Alan Cumming, Cox did a long interview with The Times, who were clever enough to get him yapping about various other famous people.

“I do mourn when people didn’t know who I was,” Cox said, which doesn’t really seem like the truth given how much he clearly loves popping off about stuff. His latest victims? Johnny Depp, whom he calls “overblown” and “overrated” while saying he’s relieved to have passed off the role of the governor in the Pirates movies to Jonathan Pryce. He then says that Ian McKellen’s acting is “not to his taste.” Mr. Cox, have you seen him on Extras? You may laugh. He also calls Kevin Spacey a “stupid, stupid man.” Okay, admittedly that one is crazy because not long ago, he was actually defending Spacey. What changed in the interim? Maybe he saw Spacey’s one-man show and said, “I’ve had enough”? Later he says Margot Robbie might be “too beautiful” to play Cathy in Wuthering Heights before catching himself and saying the film “may be” brilliant. One person he lets off the hook? His old frenemy Jeremy Strong. Cox claims Strong “begged me to stop talking about him,” which is just about the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. “He’s a wonderful actor,” Cox confesses.

Does he go on to say something kind of passive-aggressive about Strong? Well, duh. It’s a Brian Cox interview. What did you think would happen?
