BBC Studios has created what it is calling the first fully rights-cleared streaming platform developed for airlines.
BBC Player has been developed with Panasonic Avionics and will provide in-flight entertainment with BBC Studios shows.
BBC Player will have different sections including BBC Earth, BBC News, BritBox, BBC Kids and CBeebies. BBC Studios is terming the player the first fully rights-cleared streaming platform developed for airlines. It speaks to the BBC’s desire to generate more commercial income, which has become a crucial strategic play as license fee income declines. “Growing BBC Studios to maximise commercial
returns while nurturing the BBC brand,” was flagged as a key priority in the recent BBC Annual Plan.
Zina Neophytou, SVP Out of Home and BBC Commercial News at BBC Studios, said: “Launching BBC Player with Panasonic later this year will be transformative for the inflight entertainment industry. BBC Studios continues to drive innovation and is the first studio to bring air travellers a state-of-the-art, fully rights cleared streaming platform, whenever and wherever they fly.
He added: “Passengers will enjoy a continuously evolving library of the best stories from the BBC, enhancing their inflight experience with a service they will instantly recognise, trust and love.”
