Emily Bader and Logan Lerman are ready to be thirty, flirty and thriving.
Netflix has announced a reboot of the 2004 romantic comedy “13 Going on 30,” with Bader and Lerman taking over as the leads. The original film starred Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo.
On March 24, the streaming giant tweeted the casting news and announced that Garner will be an executive producer. The “13 Going on 30” reboot will be directed by Bretty Haley, who recently worked with Bader on the hit Netflix flick “People We Meet on Vacation,” based on the Emily Henry novel of the same name.
In a statement about teaming up with Bader again and rebooting the beloved movie, Haley said in a statement, “‘13 Going on 30’ is one of those rare, perfect films. Funny, emotional, deeply human, with unforgettable performances from Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Judy Greer. I’m a longtime fan, so stepping into this reimagining comes with tremendous responsibility. Jennifer Garner being on board as an executive producer, after playing such a big part of what made the original special, is especially meaningful.”
He added, “I also couldn’t be more excited to reunite with Emily Bader after ‘People We Meet on Vacation.’ She and the amazingly talented Logan Lerman are a magical pairing. I feel incredibly lucky to be trusted with something that means so much to so many people.”
At this time, Netflix has not shared information about the reboot’s plot or when it would take place.
The 2004 version is set in 1987 New Jersey, where fans are introduced to 13-year-old Jenna Rink, played by Christa B. Allen. The relatable teenager dreams of becoming popular and being accepted into the “Tom-Tom” clique at her school despite her best friend Matty Flamhaff, played by Sean Marquette, assuring her that she’s better off without them.
On her 13th birthday, Jenna throws a party at her house and Matty gifts her a custom dollhouse that he sprinkles with “magic wishing dust.” After being embarrassed by the cool kids and having her party ruined, Jenna wishes to be “thirty and flirty and thriving,” just like the model she sees on the cover of her favorite magazine. Her wish comes true and she wakes up in the body of a 30-year-old successful magazine editor, portrayed by Garner. But she soon realizes being an adult isn’t as glamorous as she thought it would be. She also wants to rekindle her friendship with adult Matty, portrayed by Ruffalo, after learning the two had a falling out.
Judy Greer, Andy Serkis, Jim Gaffigan and a young Brie Larson also starred in the film.
“13 Going on 30,” featuring a “Thriller” dance sequence, ‘80s fashion and makeup and a Billy Joel needle drop, has continued to delight rom-com fans over the years. Garner has also frequently reflected on her time filming the movie and shared throwback photos from the set on Instagram.
In July 2025, she celebrated Greer, whom she has remained close friends with, turning 50.
“We were friends before taking pictures was a thing, but there is still a little documentation. 266 months of ‘JG’ and 600 months of @missjudygreer. Happy 50th, Judy! I love you,” she captioned a slideshow of pictures that included snaps of her and Greer as Jenna and Tom-Tom.
The post also included a screenshot from 2024 of the two on a video call with Ruffalo when the trio reunited to celebrate the movie’s 20th anniversary.
