Spring is in full swing in the nation’s capital, bringing with it warmer days, longer evenings and, for a brief but enchanting moment, an explosion of pink and white blooms that attract more than 1.6 million visitors to the city.
This year, peak bloom was declared on March 26, ranking among the 20 earliest in more than a century of records. According to the National Park Service, which looks after the 3,500 cherry blossom trees across the city, peak bloom date is defined as the point when 70 percent of the Yoshino cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin are open.
