Mason Josh, principal stylist at Josh Wood Atelier, is a fan of updos for fine hair. “Thinner strands can sometimes struggle to maintain shape for long periods, particularly from morning preparation through to late evening celebrations,” he says. “Choosing an up-do can help prevent the style from dropping, while padded buns or softly structured shapes can create a fuller silhouette.”

“Weather is an important consideration, particularly if your hair naturally has a tendency to drop, frizz or lose volume in humidity,” says Timperley, who recommends working with your hair’s natural texture as styles that fight against it may not hold as well.

These should be avoided, says Timperley as they can create an unbalanced shape in photographs. “Excessively tight styling can also emphasize the fineness of the hair, so incorporating movement and lift is usually more flattering,” she adds.

This can influence the final look. “Some styles can leave one side more exposed, so balance is key to ensure the hairstyle feels comfortable and looks flattering from every angle,” says Timperley.

“For those with fine or thin hair, textured or structured updos are often the most reliable option, as they allow a stylist to build shape, volume and longevity into the look,” he says. “Updos make it easier to incorporate discreet enhancements such as extensions or padding, helping to create the illusion of fuller hair while ensuring the style holds throughout the day.”
In terms of products, texturizing sprays help to create grip. Root color sprays “can also add depth at the roots, making the hair appear thicker and more dimensional in photographs,” Josh says.
Timperley name checks soft waves, gentle teasing at the crown and layered styling techniques as all helping to create the illusion of density. “Ultimately, the goal is to build volume in a way that still feels natural and comfortable throughout the day, ensuring the style remains consistent from the ceremony through to the evening celebrations,” she adds.
